The state flower of South Dakota, the pasque flower, is a fuzzy purple flower that blooms in early spring around Easter time. The name “pasque” actually translates “Easter” in French. It is sensitive to the weather, and will close its petals when it becomes cloudy. In Christianity, the pasque flower was associated with themes of rebirth, dignity, nobility, and grace. It’s purple pigmentation was even used to dye Easter eggs amongst early Europeans.
