- - Its name directly translating from Greek to English as “fish”, was used in Christianity as early as the first century. Oftentimes the letters ἸΧΘΥΣ are present in the body of the fish. The Greek letters are an acronym for Ἰ (Jesus), Χ (Christ (anointed)), Θ ([of] God), Υ (Son), Σ (Savior), or “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior”. The fish was also used by Christians during their persecution by the Roman Empire to mark important places, such as temples or tombs, and as an aide to help distinguish friend from foe.
